Sunrisers Hyderabad Qualifies For Knockouts

Sunrisers Hyderabad has qualified for the IPL knockouts 2026 by defeating Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Sunrisers handed a 5-wicket defeat to Super Kings thanks to performances from Kishan, Klassen, and Cummins.

Finally, MS Dhoni also appeared in the IPL 2026 for the first and probably the last time in this season and in his IPL career as well. However, his calf injury continued to hinder him during the match and kept him sidelined from the encounter most of the time.

With this win, Sunrisers Hyderabad qualified for knockouts and took Gujarat Titans along with them. Despite getting defeated in this match, CSK is still in the equation of qualification for the knockouts.

Match Summary

In the 63rd match of the IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings fought the battle of the playoff qualifications at MA Chidambaram Stadium. In this encounter, Super Kings won the toss and chose to bat first. After inviting themselves to bat on a decent-looking wicket at MA Chidambaram, Chennai scored 57 runs for the loss of 2 wickets in powerplay. Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Urvil Patel and Kartik Sharma: every top-order batter of CSK got a start but could not convert that into a big innings. Late fireworks by Dewald Brewis (44 off 27) and Shivam Dubey (26 off 23) propel CSK to a respectable total of 180/7 in 20 overs.

In reply to a target of 181, Sunrisers get a comparatively slower start, scoring just 45 runs and losing only 1 wicket. Coming in as a substitute, Travis Head (6 off 6) was sent back to the pavilion by Mukesh Choudahary. Abhishek Sharma also got out cheaply and his miserable innings of 26 off 21 was ended by Akeal Hosein. At one point, Sunrisers were looking behind in the game with a score of 56/2 in 7.4 overs; after that, Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen took charge of the innings and formed a partnership of 75 runs in just 6.5 overs.

Klassen was dismissed on an individual score of 47 off 26 when SRH’s total was 131 in 14.5 overs. From there it was just a formality, which SRH fulfilled in 19 overs by scoring 181/5. Ishan Kishan scored a blistering fifty, scoring 70 off 47. Pat Cummins emerged as a hero with the ball, taking 3 wickets in his 4-over quota by conceding only 28 runs.

Gaikwad in Limelight Again for Wrong Reasons

Ruturaj again took the center stage but for the wrong reasons, as he became the second batter in this season to not hit a boundary in the powerplay after remaining not out. Arshin Kulkarni of Lucknow Super Giants becomes the first batter to bag this record in this season. Gaikwad’s 15 off 21 remained the lowest contribution by an opener still at the crease when his team reached the 100-run mark.

200 T20 Wickets for Pat Cummins

On a patch assisting the batters and a little bit to the spinners, Pat Cummins put up a great pace bowling show, generating numbers of 3/28 in 4 overs. Cummins begged the wickets of Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Kartik Sharma to reach the landmark of 200 T20 wickets.

Chennai Super Kings Qualification Scenario

For the final qualifier berth in the 2026 IPL season, CSK is getting tough competition from PBKS and RR, where the Punjab Kings are favorites to qualify as the fourth team. However, CSK can still qualify but their qualification heavily depends on Lucknow Super Giants, as RR and PBKS both have to play their last match against LSG and if LSG wins both matches and CSK defeats Gujarat Titans in their final round-robin game, CSK can go through to the playoffs.
